About Us
Art FORM instills art education and environmental stewardship through creative reuse. Through our workshop content, process and materials, students and the community can engage in an art form that inspires ingenuity, problem solving and conservation.
Art FORM serves over 500 local students through art workshops, diverts over 8 tons of reusable materials, and engages over 1,500 additional community members during special events and partnerships in San Diego per year.
Art FORM programs are back in person at San Diego Mid-City elementary schools - helping students practice an art form that inspires ingenuity, problem solving, and conservation.
Open to teachers, students, artists and the community, our Creative Reuse Store contains a treasure trove of unique items available for purchase. Our ever-changing inventory of supplies such as fabrics, paper, yarn and more is a creative person's dream. The Art FORM store is open Wednesday-Sunday at a new location a mile west of the original Art FORM studio. We offer appointment-only donation drop off. Erin Pennell
Creative Program Director
Art Educator
Erin founded Art FORM as way to extend art and environmental education, through diverting reuse materials and making them accessible for projects with local schools and community partnerships. For over 12 years, Art FORM has provided free art education and environmental stewardship to the San Diego community. Recognizing the gap in art education, and lack of art resources, Erin created an innovative art studio for children and families, The Rare Hare Studio launching in January 2008. A mainstay business of Adams Avenue, Erin’s studio provided art classes for all ages at a time when children or family art spaces were not plentiful in San Diego. Erin brings a unique blend of distinctive art process honoring creative reuse at the core, and allowing for exploration in a variety of art mediums, and skill levels. Developing a nonprofit that would expand art and environmental programs to the community for free and low-cost was the next step, with Art FORM establishing nonprofit status in 2011.
Grateful and honored by the connection and contribution of several long time partners, teachers, community members, and donors, Erin fosters relationships that involve Art FORM at its highest level of engagement. Integrating climate change education in regular programming was pivotal step, and allowed existing work with creative reuse to be expanded with students and community partners. A San Diego native, Erin has worked in variety of educational settings in California including San Fransisco, San Luis Obispo County, and San Diego bringing a breadth of experience to her work. Currently Art FORM provides the majority of its programming to San Diego Mid-City public elementary schools free of charge, as well as several free community engagement events per year.
Educational delivery is rapidly changing; Erin is eager to adapt curricular strategies, to connect with students during times when in-person workshops may not be an option. Published in May 2020, The Pollinator Pantin Kit is one of a series of kits created by Erin to connect students and families with art and nature, especially during times of distance learning.
Working with creative reuse, and observing natural habitats are often the impetus for Erin to create further. Other joyful activities include include with painting with water color; fiber arts, free quilting, wood assemblage, and cooking without recipes. In March Erin learned to sew on a 1945 Singer machine, a wonky ride that reminded Erin that being the student helps you become a better teacher. Succulents have recently taken over the sewing machine, as the latest teacher.
