From Jason Porter, Director of Education for San Diego Museum of Man

As the Director of Education and Public Engagement at the San Diego Museum of Man, I oversee programs in which students and visitors create works of art in response to our collection objects, to exhibits, and to their gallery experiences. Thanks to Art FORM, thousands of visitors (of all ages) get the opportunity to experiment with unique, repurposed materials, and to consider the importance of reuse and sustainability in their daily lives. They use a wide variety of art techniques – from STEAM skills like designing and building to expressive forms such as assemblage, mixed media, and sculpture. Our educators work closely with the staff and volunteers at Art Form in consultation on a variety of projects. In each instance, we derive great benefit from their encouraging, thoughtful, and creative suggests for using materials to express ideas and connect to our institutional values. In its work with teachers, young people, and the public, Art FORM is an essential resource in San Diego that uses the arts to teach stewardship of our planet, and what could be more necessary or urgent than that?

From Mr. Renner, First grade teacher, Normal Heights Elementary

“I am so grateful for the experiences that Art FORM continues to provide my students each year, as they are invaluable to the development of the whole child and contribute positively to our classroom community.”

“Our school systems are still feeling the effects of years of crippling budget cuts that have yet to be restored with one of the effects being fewer field trips and real-life experiences outside of the classroom. The workshops that Art FORM provides free of charge to my students multiple times each year are not only something I look forward to experiencing with my students, but offer a much needed supplement to the underrepresented area of arts education in our school system.”

Mrs. Beltran, Second grade teacher, Normal Heights Elementary

“Art FORM serves as a reminder and model for my students in taking responsibility for our environment and planet. They become young ambassadors of the Earth in their community. The children begin to see the importance of recycling and reuse. The idea of wastefulness becomes more concrete.”
